NYRA-DC Meeting: February 12
There were three people at this meeting.
Dave Varney, NYRA-DC secretary
Alex Koroknay-Palicz, NYRA President
Katrina Moncure, NYRA-DC member (me!)
Some important issues for our chapter are the DC Video Game ban and, of course, recruiting recruiting recruiting! Dave found out info about the bill (which I'll post in a minute), and we're thinking of going to DC high schools to circulate a petition on it. I'll be making up the quarter sheets.
HS newspapers are also on our contact list. Basically, Dave looks up contact info and it's my job to do the actual contacting, for the most part. The MPAA and DC retailers may also be good opposers of this very age-discriminating bill, as well as the SPLC, so we're seeing if they'd be interested in joining our fight.
Also, there is our endless quest to gain members, which we need badly! Events of all sorts are good to look into. We were at NCOR last week. Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) had an event back in November at College Park. Since HFStival is no more, I'll see what else we can do that's within our budget. While tabling events usually yields names and e-mail addresses of people we never see or hear from again anyway, there are the precious few to whom we're just what we've been looking for. We need to be there for those who support our cause. United we stand, you know!
We had a benefits concert last May at the Electric Maid in Takoma Park. Since then, nothing much has happened in that area. However, we'd like to get that going again. I believe NYRA-DC members Alexis and Rio were in charge of that. If we could have regular benefits concerts at the Maid or something along those lines, that would be terrific!
That's pretty much the whole thing. Next meeting is March 5. Probably at Cleveland Park library again, but we'll see. We look forward to more people!:)
